Residential Chemical Waste Storage - Emergency Response / Chemical Waste
Location: Kitchener, ON
QMLP was contacted to assess and clean up a rural property in Kitchener, ON which had a large stockpile of waste chemicals stored on it. The project was completed under an order from the Ministry of the Environment while the resident was held in police custody on a related matter. The site consisted of the main residential home, various small out buildings and transportation vehicles filled with packaged hazardous waste.
Over 1000 containers of varying size were sampled, categorized, packaged and removed for proper disposal.
A complete site safety plan enforced by detailed emergency operating procedures allowed for the incident to safely and systematically move forward. Most of the work on site was completed using complex PPE and specialized equipment. The entire project was completed in a 72 hour time period. The chemicals handled on the project included:
- Flammable liquids
- Flammable solids
- Compressed gasses
- Oxidizing agents
- Poisons
- Corrosive materials
This project illustrates how effective risk assessment and intimate knowledge of Ontario’s waste management process can safely deal with one the worst case scenarios for a municipality.
