Clandestine Drug Lab - Emergency Response / Chemical Waste Disposal

Location: West Gray, ON

QMLP was activated by the Municipality of West Grey Fire department to respond to a methamphetamine lab discovered in a home following a fire response at the residence. QMLP attended the site and completed an initial Hazard investigation to ensure the facility was safe for unprotected investigators to move about the home. The site was inspected for hazards and metered to test air quality and a site specific procedure was written up and implemented, allowing for police to complete their investigation and collect evidence. When investigators had finished their work, all chemicals and drug making materials were packaged for disposal. The materials were transported to a secure disposal facility and stored for 6 months pending the outcome of the trial. This job had a number of challenging elements which were unique to this site:

  • Locked storage containers
  • Large dogs
  • Challenging geographic terrain
  • Unknown chemical mixtures
  • Incompatible chemical storage (anhydrous ammonia in propane cylinder with brass valve)
  • Crime scene evidence preservation

Although not required, complete decontamination of exposed persons was implemented to deal with anticipated issues on the site.
