Art Gallery HazMat Abatement and Demolition

Location: Toronto, ON

This project involved the abatement and demolition of a building situated in an extremely sensitive location.

Abatement included Type II, Type III and glove bag removal of asbestos and mould.

The demolition component required various methods of demolition. Backhoes and excavators were used to break and shear multiple levels of concrete in various locations within the building, just feet away from sections that housed millions of dollars of artwork.

Governed by the art gallery’s vibration monitor system, extreme measures were taken to complete the demolition work without setting off the monitors which protected the art work.

Another phase of the project consisted of a six floor structure located in the centre of the building. It was systematically dismantled by way of saw cutting and removing large pieces of concrete, weighing approximately 80,000 lbs. with a 550 ton crane that was set up on a suspended slab with reinforced shoring.
